During the country’s partition in August 1947, I, the Author, was a 4 or 5 year old child from a very affluent family. We lived in a village in the Lyallpur district of present-day Pakistan. Upon the country’s partition, my family abandoned all our belongings and migrated empty-handed to free India and to an uncertain future. With no idea of our ultimate destination, we moved from one refugee camp to another, and spent a little over a year en route in several such camps, where the family survived on free dry rations provided by the authorities. We finally settled in Kishan Pura, a village in the Firozpur district of Punjab at the end of October 1948, and struggled every day for survival.
